Eells with the opening of their first store in Sabin, Minnesota. In 1917, the company expanded with a second store in Moorhead, Minnesota and changed its name to SCHEELS & Company.
SCHEELS continued to grow throughout the Midwest with new store openings in Bismarck, North Dakota (1931), Grand Forks, North Dakota (1935), Duluth, Minnesota (1939), Sioux Falls, South Dakota (1949), and Omaha, Nebraska (1965). The company expanded outside of the Midwest for the first time in 1971 with the opening of a store in Reno, Nevada.
The 1980s brought significant growth for SCHEELS with new stores opening in Iowa City, Iowa (1982), Eden Prairie, Minnesota (1984), St. Cloud, Minnesota (1985), Mankato, Minnesota (1987), and Des Moines, Iowa (1989). In 1986, SCHEELS made its largest acquisition to date when it purchased Cavalier Sports from longtime rival JCPenney. This purchase added six stores to the SCHEELS network – three in North Dakota and three in South Dakota.
